How can we improve Maya?

    Hello, I am a long - term Maya teaching university teacher, and also a loyal user of the software. I would like to talk about my views on the future direction of Maya software.

    • PBR support in the viewport like blender Eeve

      Maya really needs to update the viewport to improve the display of PBR models. It would be extremely useful to have a viewport like blender Eeve.

      • New Outlined Selection Hightlighting

        Mayas default wireframe selection highlight is sometimes distracting, I think it would be smarter if we can get the same selection highlight like in Unreal Engine 4, new Blender 2.8 Evee or 3ds max.
        A colored outline is by far less distracting if you animate or deform the shape of an object than the always visible wireframe. And the always on selection wireframe should be disabled or at least toggleable, so poeple which prefer it the other way around can change to the old method.

        • New Viewport 2 Shading mode similar to Quad Draw Wireframe Overlay and Mesh Alpha

          The shading mode Quad Draw enables it's pretty awesome. That allows seeing trough the mesh while the wireframe is still visible etc.
          Unfortunately right now that preview mode is only available to the Quad Draw tool. We should be able to enable that Shading mode on all objects in the scene or on selected objects only when needed. That Wireframe Overlay and Mesh Alpha could be very useful for other actions too not only Quad Draw related.               possiblity to export channels like we can do using a software render.
              AO, vector, lighting, diffuse, specular etc

              this will allow to a lot of artists and previz artists to have more tools to work with without become crazy

                • expand limit of 16 ( or maybe more) lights in viewport 2.0

                  in complicated sets sometimes in have like 40 lights and, i'm constraint each time to discover what I need to turn off to have possibility to See new lights just created but already out this limit.

                    • Easier object manipulation in orthographic views with scroll wheel

                      Being able to scroll with a mouse while holding down the center point with the move tool and having the object move closer or farther from the orthographic camera direction would be very useful and mean less jumping back and forth from ortho and perspective views.

                        It would be nice to be able to disable shadows in the viewfinder so I can more easily tell if I accidentally made bad geometry or if that's a shadow effect. An alternative would be to have the ability to change the color of the bad geometry.... like, red or blue for example... make it a user setting.

                        • Let ShaderFx read and write the frame buffer

                          This way we can not only design foward surface shaders, but also screen space effects and deferred shading. This is standard today and would be awesome to have this kind of freedom in shaderfx. This (with cascade shadow maps) could easily be used for some next level pre-viz.

                            Please add a Perspective Match tool like 3ds Max.

                            Currently we are left to 'eyeball' the matching of backplates.

                            • curves are too slow to handle in maya

                              Lots of curves are almost impossible to handle in Maya.
                              Right now we are working on a lots of birds and we choose to do the primary feathers with curves which get deformed in Softimage and brought back to Maya as Arnold standin.

                              It was impossible to do deformations of ~300.000 curves in Maya and there is no way to have something like strands for particles since I assume Maya does not support the concept of having an array stored on a point (which would be necassary for strands).

                              So I was hoping that it might be possible to improve…

                              • Camera Improvements, height, tilt, overlay info, frustrum, metadata, etc

                                Was working on previz for a real world project and found maya cameras to be really unfriendly.

                                I suggest the following improvements:

                                1. Camera tilt - angle to horizon, no matter what the rotate x,y,z are.
                                2. Camera height - set whatever ground plane and get realtime height.
                                3. Change lens and have the "Camera Aperture" update to keep the same framing.
                                4. Change "Camera Aperture" and update the lens to keep the same framing.
                                5. Link/Unlink the "camera aperture" to lens.
                                6. Rename "camera aperture" to sensor size?

                                  • unlock and change the default grey lambert shader

                                    Since viewport 2.0 is the new standard for graphic cards it would be great to have some matcaps as standard materials. It´s really productive to model with usefull shaders that allow you to see curvature and decent fake reflections.
                                    Im not talking about the direct x shader which is very cool, but a matcap type like this:

                                    • Disable Viewport 2.0 and OpenCL startup info

                                      I'd like an option to disable the startup info (see below) that prints to stdout regarding Viewport 2.0 and OpenCL. Its quite a bit of text that is useful to very few people, so I'd like to disable it at my studio if possible. Having that debug text always printing results in loss of genuine information regarding crashes because it is muddled in with this generic info.

                                      • Camera movement like unreal engine 4 (Shift + move tool, Bring the camera along for the ride)

                                        Shift+move tool would be a really bug improvement on Maya and Maya LT. I don't enjoy moving an object around then having to move the camera around separately. adding Shift + move tool would allow the camera to come along for the ride.
