How can we improve Maya?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Paint tool value sampling

    For painting mesh colors and skin weights: Allow user to hold a hotkey down that puts the paint tool into a sample mode. When user LMB on the surface the paint tool samples geometry within the tool radius and averages values into a single RGBA or skin weight value - and uses that value to set the current paint tool value.     • Reset values to default

      Sometimes we want to change some attributes (on a shader, texture, node - in short: on everything that can be changed) to see what the result is gonna be. However, it's not always that this result is what we were expecting and when we decide to come back to the default values most of the time we don't remember what the default numbers were.

        Any default object should be hidden by default in all type of views such as:

        • PopUp Channel Box onTransforms

          PopUp Channel Box onTransforms
          It would be awesome if Maya has a Mini Pop Up channel Box in the transforms like: Translate, Rotation and Scale. It woul be more at hand and you shouldnt have to move the mouse a lot... If I press the rotation only the attributes of the rotation will appear with some of other ting related to it like the step snap on and off. Or in the translate the Symetry settings.           • Custom data locations in file dialog

            If I have some custom data locations set for my project. These would be things like ZBrush/substance exports, reference images, shaders etc in paths relative to the Maya project. It would be really nice if I could choose some of them to appear appear in Maya's standard file dialog alongside the primary ones.

            • add the ability to assign material channels like 3ds Max

              Maya really could use the ability to assign a material channel number like 3DS Max has. Being able to assign a specific number is extremely helpful when dealing with game engine and having it in Maya would have saved me some time tonight where I wouldn't have had to open max, import my FBX file, assign the channel numbers, then export again.

              • Allow back and forward mouse buttons to be used in file browser

                When viewing the file browser, for opening a file or importing it would be nice to be able to use the back and forward buttons on my mouse to navigate through the folders.

                  it will be great to have 2.5D view in maya like zbrush so that it can handle a huge number of polygons and improve the work with sculpting brushes.

                  • May Game Exporter Adding Animation Clips

                    The Game Exporters Animaiton Clips menu allows you to add in new clips, but you can only do one at a time, it also can take a couple chugging seconds once many are on the list so potential optimization of that would be good if possible.

                    But yeah having a function so i can add more then one clip at a time, instead of having to click a lot of times at points with pauses waiting for it to process each time that would be great :)

                    • Math Operations

                      Maya should helps us to be quicker in what we are doing, and at the same time be artist friendly. Why in the channel box we cant make math operations? like for example if I want to rotate my object in Y 180*3, why I cant just write that on the atribute an it by himself do the mat, im not a mathematician... im not as quick with the numbers... or in the render settings if I dont know what is 720 / 2 why I cant just write that an maya make the operation by myself...                       • Searchable Commands and Attributes

                        Because menu commands are so completely buried in Maya, it would be great to simply just type in a search bar to pull up the command immediately. Would also be great to do the same for attributes in a menu.

                          Good day Autodesk! I have a few comments about your node editor. I want to inform you that the current nodes connection design is horrible and devoid of any logic! First of all, I do not understand why I have to click on the node such as "addDoubleLinear" three times to get to the input attributes?
                          Why if the attribute is already attached, it disappears from the shortcut menu??? All work in the node editor is reduced to the mad mouse clicking!

                          Ideas:
                          1) access to all (input or output) attributes inside of quick menu that appears when you try…

                          • Having a Notes/Comment panel in Maya

                            I think this may make project management a lot easier, especially when you have to come back to an old project that has multiple versions...I want to be able to write and save notes that describe where I left this off, etc.

                              Make a preset editor which works. Just deleting presets is not enough.
                              You need to be able to delete the options you don't need.
                              For example that preset for fluids which only has fluid colors options. Presets have to work when they have only few lines. This worked before.

                              • Double pressing hotkeys

                                It would be very nice if we could set up hotkeys by hitting the same key twice (something similar to the same logic as the mouse's click, where we have one click for an action and two clicks on the same button for another action)? We could make a lot of nice hotkeys in order to make our life easier.

                                  • List current Project under File/Set Project...

                                    When you work with dozens of projects, it isn't easy to tell which Project is set. This causes files to be saved in the wrong place. If the current one was shown beneath 'File/Set Project...' in the File menu that would save a lot of anguish.

                                      • CTRL+A to raise attribute editor over other windows

                                        Hello,

                                        Its been a huge annoyance in maya since a long time where if attributes editor is hidden below another window like hypershade, pressing hot key to raise it does not bring it over top of the window its currently under.

                                        So a user has to move all his windows around to find where it exists.

                                        It would be fantastic if this worked!

                                        • Add more panel slots to the quick layout bar

                                          I don't know why, but in the newest version of Maya Autodesk has decided to limit those panel slots to only 3 customizable ones. In Maya 2016 there are 6, so when it comes to this feature, in my opinion the 2018 version has got worse than the older ones.

                                          So, my suggestion is: please make the addition of more panel slots possible.
