How can we improve Maya?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. glTF support is needed for VR/AR industry

    Those of us in the VR/AR industry are rapidly embracing the glTF 2.0 file format.

    Sites like Sketchfab are embracing this format and it is gaining momentum.

    However, right now, creating glTF assets is very difficult-- there are a few ways of converting existing formats but most of them are extremely cumbersome, require other software (Blender, for example), and are generally not very robust yet.

    I will speak on behalf of us in the VR/AR industry in saying that we really need the support of companies like Autodesk to help us.

    • "Save As" Default Location

      In 2016, when you click "Save As..." it would take you to your scene folder, and you could save your file. Now in 2017 when you click Save As this takes you to whatever folder you were last in. This is useless.

      Please revert back to Save As location sending you directly to the scene folder you set in your project window.

      • upgrade student file to commercial file with a fee

        I have been working on a few projects from which I wanted to make money. By using them for commercial purposes, I would be violating the terms of service. These files have a tag or identifier embedded into the file and likely encrypted for obvious reasons. They have a notification every time they are opened that states it is a student file. I had planned to upgrade to a commercial licence soon but realized that won't change the file status. I will still upgrade regardless.         • select objects before import a file

          maybe i want to import only 2 objects on a file... so, like in 3ds Max, you can select the objects before click import file,
          now you have to import ALL the objects inside the file and then you have to delete unused object

            • Autodesk Desktop App should keep list of Appstore downloads.

              Like Unreal and other software with desktop launchers, It would be great if the Autodesk Desktop app kept track of app downloads. For example: I recently downloaded the bonus tools from the Autodesk app store- which downloaded an MSI installer. It would be AMAZING if adding things was as simple as clicking a button in the desktop app and having it be connected to Maya.

              • Auto-sync user settings for multiple computers

                Option to auto-sync user settings instead of having to manually update it via example Dropbox when working on different computers. Workspaces, Hotkey sets, Settings etc.

                  • Easy bridge between Maya Polygons to Alias Nurbs modeling

                    Maya and Alias should have a much smoother and easier way of passing and converting data. An easy "live" bridge would be awesome. Currently its a mess as its impossible to get poly data to clean nurbs to begin with (can't keep hard corners, can't have open or creased edges). And even disregarding the surface problems that are created through the subdiv conversion Maya deletes the shaders before exporting as well which makes multiple objects or shells non selectable in Alias.                       • Correctly Open ma/mb files with the correct version of maya

                        When multiple versions of maya are installed. Opening maya files by double clicking on them results in them being open by the version of maya most recently installed. In past attempts, even trying the 'open-with' options in windows and picking the correct maya executable would not work. Please write something so that windows properly detects what maya file version is saved as, and open that scene file with the correct maya. If the maya version is not present, set it to open with most recent/closest version #.

                        • SVG & Adobe Illustrator Import - Revisit And Redesign For True Production Value Please.

                          The addition of SVG import in 2015 Ext 1 was a great start. Great job guys. However, it needs to be revisited and overhauled to be more production appropriate.

                          1) Please develop TRUE support for Adobe Illustrator files with multiple paths and colors. This is already present in competing 3D platforms. SVG is old school. Especially in today's subscription market where so many shops are using Adobe day to day. Think pipeline. It's surprising you guys missed that the first time round. You're pretty damn good with pipeline stuff.

                          • Maya scene thumbnail icons with Windows

                            3Ds Max and Cinema 4D scenes display thumbnail icons in Windows Explorer. Maya does not.

                            • Read and write one frame per file using Alembic IO

                              Current Alembic IO in Maya don't support to read and write one frame per file. This feature could be implemented to load cache files using "#" in filename.

                              • Reference Editor lacking

                                Reference editor could be improved immensely with the following;

                                1) Currently it only displays file name, there could be other coloumns like filesize, file location, how many materials/lights/polys/ etc are connected to the reference and custom comments so we can write things in the last coloumn. These can all be turned on and off

                                2) "Replace reference" should also replace all instances of the reference not just the parent reference and leave empty groups everywhere

                                • UV snapshot exported as Ai Path.

                                  when exporting a UV snapshot id love the feature to export the UV's as a vector path. this would help a lot with finer details and for those who enjoy working with illustrator as well a Photoshop.

                                  • Make texture paths relative!

                                    As someone who often has to switch between workstations when working on a project, the file path of the textures is very important. No matter how many times I save the files to relative, Maya always, ALWAYS, sets them to global. This is particularly annoying in the lighting/rendering stage, when I often have to link the files again to the project folder. The path SHOULD be relative if it's saved as relative.

                                      Hello Maya devs,

                                      Could you please change Maya's start-up options so that Maya will try to import files, if it cannot simply open them?

                                      So that if you double-klick on something like an fbx file in the (windows) explorer (and if Maya is set as the default program for fbx files and the relevant plug-in is installed). Maya will just open the file?

                                      I mean, currently if I do this with Maya 2015, I get some "filetype unrecognized" message and I have to click it away, and either drag and drop the file into Maya or go through the import…

                                        Maya on Linux should also have this features, at least for Unreal Engine since Unreal Engine can run on Linux natively.
                                        Autodesk please don't tie us only to Windows and Mac!
